194: A LAKOTA CATLINITE PIPE WITH QUILLWORK STEM

A nice example from the last quarter of the 19th century, catlinite bowl carved with concentric rings, the square-cut wood stem with whittled mouthpiece, dyed porcupine, dyed horsehair, mallard feathers and silk ribbon. Strong patina on the pipestone portion.
Wood stem measures 23.24 x 1.25 and the bowl is 4.75 x 8.5 inches.
Very good condition, noting scattered minor nicks, three to four chips, no cracks or repairs, the quillwork with 5% loss, tattering to silk and other embellishments.
Provenance: The estate of a Wyoming collector.
