A LAKOTA PIPE WITH SALMON COLORED CATLINITE BOWL

169: A LAKOTA PIPE WITH SALMON COLORED CATLINITE BOWL

A very handsome example with beautifully colored catlinite carved in concentric rings, the wide square-cut ash(?) wood stem with finely plaited dyed and undyed porcupine quillwork, dyed horse tail, sinew wrapping, trade cloth bits and fine patina. Last quarter of the 19th century.
Stem measures 27.75 x 1.5 and the bowl is 5 x 9 inches.
One very small more recent, chip to the rim of the top rim, two minor nicks, no other chips, cracks or repairs. The stem appears to have had horse tail hair dyed white now lost opposite the red, loss of original quill plaiting equals approximately 20% or less.
Provenance: The estate of a Wyoming collector.
