MODEL TOTEM BY AN UNIDENTIFIED NUU-CHAH-NULTH ARTIST

185: MODEL TOTEM BY AN UNIDENTIFIED NUU-CHAH-NULTH ARTIST

The circa 1915 example is carved from yellow cedar and painted in Native pigments.

This example is distinctive for its squared live edge base and shows the hallmarks of an anonymous but prolific carver or workshop associated with Ye Olde Curiosity Shop in Seattle. The specific maker of these is unknown, but scholars (including Kate Duncan in 1001 Curious Things: Ye Olde Curiosity Shop and Native American Art) have identified a 'shop hand' or small circle of Nuu-chah-nulth carvers who consistently used live-edge bases and repeated figure sequences like this. Similar examples are documented in photographs of Ye Olde Curiosity Shop from 1907-1915, sitting on shelves in rows.

The name 'Nuu-chah-nulth' means 'all along the mountains and sea,' Their art is known for its bold, angular style and most often depicts animals, mythological creatures, and humans. This carving perhaps relates to the legend of a young woman who, against all advice, goes deep into the woods and is enticed into marriage by a bear that appears in human form.

Ye Olde Curiosity Shop is one of Seattle's most unique and long-standing attractions. Founded in 1899 by Joseph Edward 'Daddy' Standley, it is still in business today.
